“Cyberpunk 2077 – Phantom Liberty” in the test: Idris Elba makes everything better
Cyberpunk 2077 – Phantom Liberty
“Phantom Liberty” is a new expansion for the three-year-old role-playing game “Cyberpunk 2077”. In the additional story, Idris Elba appears as a spy. Does star power help against old technology glitches?
Of course Idris Elba is also in a bad mood. No wonder. Everything is bad, that’s almost always the punchline. The world of “Phantom Liberty” is so incredibly dark that it becomes almost unintentionally funny.
Phantom Liberty
That was the case with the basic game; “Phantom Liberty” is just an add-on. The main game is called “Cyberpunk 2077″ and is no longer brand new, but is still being actively improved and developed. At the end of 2020, the Polish developer CD Projekt RED brought the dark vision of the future onto the market. The studio’s reputation had been impeccable until then. Previously, it had created a monumental hit with “The Witcher 3”. Millions of loyal fans therefore blindly picked up “Cyberpunk 2077”.
“Cyberpunk 2077” had big problems
They received a game with a lot of potential, with great ambitions, but also with massive technical problems. The game already suffered from numerous bugs on the PC, but it ran catastrophically poorly on the old Playstation 4 and Xbox One game consoles. Years of improvements followed.
With “Phantom Liberty” the studio is also launching a charm offensive. The free update 2.0 is now available for PCs and current game consoles. It doesn’t change the story, but it changes a lot of the surroundings. Not only have errors been ironed out, but game mechanics have been fundamentally revised. The police are now much more active in the open game world of Night City. How cyberware and character upgrades work is also new. This makes the game seem much more dynamic and flexible. And the technical glitches have not been completely ironed out, but in our PS 5 version they appear to be absolutely standard for a game of this scale.
“Cyberpunk 2077 – Phantom Liberty” is intended to fulfill a promise
If you wanted to wait for “Cyberpunk 2077” to finally run smoothly, you can get started now – at least on PCs, PS 5 and Xbox Series consoles. But if you add an additional 30 euros, you get an expansion called “Phantom Liberty” that increases everything again. New cars, weapons and equipment come into play and bring variety to the entire game. Above all, the add-on revolves around the titular mission. It is very extensive, runs over 13 missions and stars Idris Elba. The well-known actor throws himself into his role with obvious enthusiasm.
As a broken top spy, he can look broodingly into the distance, be dangerous and say one cool saying after another. His enthusiasm for playing can easily compete with that of Keanu Reeves. The other star from “Cyberpunk 2077” also plays a role in this expansion and is once again pretty thick in his portrayal of an anarchist rocker legend.
