Pas-de-Calais

Pas-de-Calais is kept on red alert for floods this Friday. The red alert for rain-flooding has been lifted since 4 p.m. for the department, which is now orange. Several evacuations took place this Friday. Schools are closed in 200 municipalities until Monday.

Pas-de-Calais is still on red alert for floods this Friday. On the other hand, the department returned to orange rain-flood vigilance this Friday since 4 p.m. Residents are still expecting the worst as they have suffered flooding since the beginning of the week. Showers will still fall in the region until the end of the afternoon, according to Météo France forecasts. “Since yesterday morning until the end of the afternoon, we will have had accumulations of 70 to 100 mm in the western part of Pas-de-Calais, which is really very important,” said the prefect of the Pas-de-Calais, Jacques Billant guest this morning from France Bleu Nord.

Rain is expected on already saturated soils which could cause rivers to overflow. The Liane, the Aa and the Canche are still on red alert. The Hem and the Lys are on orange alert. 20 to 50 mm of rain is expected in the coming hours.
The good news of the night is that the rain fell less than expected. But the firefighters have further increased their interventions since Wednesday evening and they have carried out several evacuations in Pas-de-Calais.
The causes of these floods go well beyond the question of precipitation. The geography of the basin but also the storms that have occurred in recent weeks have worsened the situation.
