CHENNAI: A division court of the Madras High Court ordered the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to raise the daily income provided to the employees from Rs.427 per day to Rs.500 per day, which is a little consolation for the sanitary workers employed under the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM).
This directive was issued by the justice R Mahadevan and justice Sathyanarayana Prasad-led panel as a temporary solace for sanitary personnel and others. This comment was given by the court after hearing a writ appeal submitted by the GCC. The GCC appealed the January 7, 2022, ruling of a single judge ordering the company to pay the NULM employees Rs 18,401 per month in remuneration.
The lawsuit was brought about by a petition that K Bharathi, the leader of Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam, submitted. The petitioner asked the court to order the GCC to raise the pay for the sanitary and conservancy staff at NULM. He pushed for the elimination of the contractual character of the position as well as fair compensation for NULM employees on line with other sanitary personnel.
As a result, a single court ordered the corporation to give the NULM employees a set monthly compensation of Rs. 18,401.
